Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS): Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What are the eligibility requirements for the STS? The STS consists of multiple-choice tests for Spanish-speaking English learners in grades two through eleven who:
At the option of the school district, schools may also test Spanish-speaking English learners who will have been in school in the United States 12 cumulative (not consecutive) months or more who are not receiving instruction in Spanish. English learners in grades two through eleven should not take the STS if they are:
Students who take the STS are required to also take the CSTs and/or CMA appropriate to their grade level. What is tested by the STS? The STS measures students' achievement of the content standards for English–language arts that address reading/language arts and the content standards for mathematics. You may administer the tests in a single day, with a break between parts or subjects, or you may administer the separate parts of the test on separate days. The content areas may be administered in any order as long as the parts are administered consecutively. Does the testing window for the STS differ from the testing window for the CSTs? No, the testing windows do not differ; all the tests in the STAR Program are administered within the same testing window. What are the end-of-course (EOC) STS tests? The EOC STS tests are Algebra I and Geometry. Who determines which EOC test a student will take? The district STAR coordinator, in collaboration with the district mathematics specialist or department, determines the EOC STS to be administered. If an Algebra I course began later in the school term and will not be completed by the end of the year, would the students take the test in the spring that year? The students would not take the Algebra I test in spring because they would not have completed the course by the end of the school year. If the students were in grade seven, they would take the STS for Mathematics (Grade 7). |
